How boring would it be if you’re always perfect?

The words of Olivia Pino, a 33 year old woman who's enjoying a satisfying social life in various countries in the world. She's a friend and a great example of what "effortless social confidence" feel like, looks like, and is.

She shares a super simple and effective way to start a social life from scratch. 

She in between the lines shares the difference that makes the difference between just meeting people or meeting people and becoming friends, and says things like:

"I now know myself more. And it doesn’t really matter what they think of me as long as I’m true to myself and that I’m speaking my truth. Why would I be worried about what they think if I’m OK with myself?"

"What I can control is my emotions, why would I try to control someone else’s emotions? It’s not my job…"

"I just introduce myself and see what comes."

"You need to sift through the shit to get to the good. It’s about having everything. You can’t see that really in the media. All you see is the perfect stuff. Having an awareness that people have flaws really helps."

"The right person will facilitate healing in you. They will help you grow and evolve and you’ll be a better person as a result of that"

The words of relationship expert and emotional freedom expert and trainer Alina Frank.

She goes over some of the fears and beliefs that prevent people from getting into a romantic relationship and then shares how to resolve these beliefs. And she also shares common troubles people run into that prevent them from staying in a relationship.

We’re talking about how anxiety can damage the sexual passion in a relationship

Don’t think that this is a problem of will-power. There are things happening in your body and mind that you can get some relief for. It might not be overnight but don’t give up.

"It seems to people (with SA) that it is a weakness to overcome. And that in and of itself is a problem because now there’s the shame and the guilt cycle that has them retreating further from life."

"The more that you can be comfortable in a wide variety of situations, the healthier you are emotionally. But because of past trauma’s people experience a very narrow window of optimal arousal. The more you heal you past, the more present you are, the more aroused, alert and really conscious you are, and with other people and social events."

"Ocytocin motivates social interaction by reducing the appropriate stress response we have when we interact with someone who’s new"...

The words of scientist, Paul J Zak, known as the 'King of Trust'. Paul is the founding Director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies and he’s Professor of Economics, Psychology and Management.

Dr. Zak also serves as Professor of Neurology and is a Senior Researcher at UCLA.

Dr. Zak is a recognised expert in oxytocin. His lab discovered in 2004 that oxytocin allows us to determine who to trust. This knowledge is being used to understand the basis for civilisation and modern economies, improve negotiations, and treat patients with neurologic and psychiatric disorders.

Dr. David Lake talks about how depression can be related to social anxiety, and about the different kinds of depression. He speaks of the kind that gets results, and the kind of depression for which you need medication. Here are a few quotes (this is a MUST listen if you’re depressed):

“When people have “melancholic depression” and they just drag themselves around and they can’t think and they can’t do anything at all, they’re absolutely exhausted all day long that’s actually a nasty business and is very very serious. And it’s important to recognise it because ordinary psychological treatments don’t work at all. Not at all. Not in the slightest. Whereas with the other kind of depression, where people are reactive to life, either over a long period or fairly quickly, reactive to negative events, you can often use psychological treatments very successfully. Especially the energy therapy treatments.”

“Doctors and alternative practitioners speak about how depression can be treated psychologically. They actually think that you either give medication or you shouldn’t. If it’s mild or moderate you can try treating your depression with psychological techniques. But if it isn’t mild or moderate, but it’s moderate or severe, you should really consider taking medication.”

“We need the best of both worlds, we need the best of orthodox medicine and we need the best of natural medicine.”

“Medication doesn’t treat an underlying problem, but it gives you an opportunity to address all these personality issues that people bring to the table when they have depression.”

“A lot of people don’t realise that anxiety and depression often coexist. And even that depression can drive anxiety. So when you actually treat the depression properly a tremendous amount of anxiety may well resolve quite quickly.”

It’s kind of like talking to your computer and saying “turn on!” and then complaining “why is it not turning on? why is it not working? what’s wrong with me?” But you need a keyboard to be able to turn it on. You have to have a way in. TAT is a way to get in.

One of the cool things about TAT is that you don’t have to talk about it, think about it, or figure anything out. You don’t have to look for any deep inner causes, you don’t have to dig or search, you just deal with whatever’s up. Ow, I feel like I can’t breathe when I’m in a group of people.. and I start to sweat.. well, then you just work with that; you work with whatever’s there for you.”

“People now react differently to me”

The words of Cathy Vartuli, who didn’t date for 13 years because she’s a 320 pound woman who was afraid to get rejected for her weight. She did a session with an expert and two weeks later she was dating and has been on hundreds of dates since.

“There are various stages of transformation, which have an order to them”

Anxiety relies on triggering sympathetic nervous system consistently, which is the part of your nervous system that is all about fighting beasts. It triggers adrenaline, it triggers cortisol, noradrenaline and dopamine as well… but is is very linked to the speed at which we talk.

Your breathing is linked to your internal voice speed. Slow your internal voice speed down and your breathing will slow down. Slow down your breathing and your nervous system will start to settle and get back to balance.

QUOTE: If you start to use the pathway towards calm more and more then what will happen is the connection to the stress pathway will start to fade. The gap will increase between that pathway and the stress pathway. And, the gap between that pathway and the happiness and calm pathway will get smaller. And so more and more nerve pathways will start to develop into happiness calm and relaxation.

Your social anxiety can be the result of a porn addiction…

QUOTE: Many studies have pointed to the dopamine system being important in socialising. Studies on social anxiety have found that maybe less dopamine is being produced or people with social anxiety have less dopamine receptors. There are also experiments on animals and even humans where they’ll purposely decrease dopamine and you’ll see a rise in anxiety and a rise in avoiding other animals or social contact. So it’s clear that the dopamine system is very important cause the dopamine system is the system that is motivating you to go out and seek rewards. The primary rewards for all social animals are of course food and water, but also sex and of course socialising. Maybe addiction-related brain changes are reversed when people give up porn and then they seek out normal rewards such as socialising.

Teun is "effortlessly socially confident". And it's likely not what you think it is. Teun is a friend I met while living in Chiang Mai. He's someone who embodies "effortless social confidence" and I've personally learned a lot from him, just by spending time with him.
